Governmental Affairs Committee


 Purpose:

 The purpose of the Governmental Affairs Committee is to organize and educate the membership in respect to legislation in the best interest of the profession of athletic training and the health care and welfare of the physically active.  The committee will also be responsible for keeping a watch on all governing boards on any matters that might concern our Association and/or law.  The committee shall submit any recommendations for legislative changes to the Executive Committee for approval.

 Composition:

 This is a LATA based committee whose chair represents the LATA on the SEATA Governmental Affairs Committee.  Professional members, in good standing with LATA, are eligible to serve on this committee.

 Duties:

  • Serve as a clearinghouse to, and a coordinator and facilitator of, LATA members’ activities in matters pertaining to state regulation of athletic training        
  • Provide information on the governmental affairs process to LATA members and others whose business and professional interest bring them in contact with the profession of athletic training. Create and/or procure materials for this purpose.
  • Cooperate with federal, state, and local regulatory bodies in matters pertaining to the regulation of athletic trainers.
  • Per direction of the LATA Executive Committee, provide recommendations for positions of specific issues pertaining to the athletic training profession.
  • Provide advocacy for the benefit of LATA members.      
 GAC Chair Duties / Responsibilities
  • The Governmental Affairs Committee Chair will provide to the LATA Executive Committee a list of all legislative bills pertaining to and/or affecting the athletic training profession in Louisiana.  The list of bills will be provided by no later than the first legislative day as published on the Louisiana Legislature website.  The chairperson will assign designated bills to committee members to be monitored on a daily basis (or as needed) throughout the legislative session and provide timely updates to the chairperson.        
  • The chairperson will be responsible for providing daily and/or weekly updates to the Executive Committee throughout the legislative session.
  • The committee chairperson will conduct regularly scheduled conference calls and/or face-to-face meetings, with committee members prior to and during the legislative session, on an as needed basis, to coordinate and provide direction related to legislative efforts.
  • The chairperson (or committee member designee) will serve as coordinator of the Capitol Hill Day and/or other legislative events.  The coordinator will receive direction from the Executive Committee.
